Tourism – as a key sector of Tunisian economy – traditionally played and still plays a crucial role in this country. Over the years, tourism has represented a catalyst for Tunisian economy and has contributed to re-define development policies. To what extent, however, tourism has stimulated a coherent and harmonic development in the country? Was the governance of this sector able to maximize Tunisia’s potentialities or, instead, has it responded to neoliberal logics or domestic constraints?
The political transformations occurred in Tunisia after the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ offer an opportunity to re-define the place of tourism within the society and the economy. The governance of this sector, as well the political effects it can produce at domestic, regional and international levels, needs to be examined in order to understand the trajectory of Tunisia today. Is there a place for a real revolution within the sector at the day? What are the challenges of this sector in this small country of the Mediterranean?
After the 2011 uprisings, the many studies and analyses on the Mediterranean countries ‘in transition’ have so far almost ignored tourism, which, as argued in this book, could instead provide an angle to understand the currently on-going evolutions of this country.
